Good Friday morning to everyone
This morning we are going the be reviewing LEED
(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
defined by the USGBC the (United States Green Building Council)
The LEED for New construction and and Major Renovation document define up to 69 total points for building projects to achieve a LEED rating. Check out my first post for more information on how it works.
We are still reviewing the SS Sustainable sites category. SS Credit 4.2 is called
Alternative Transportation: Bicycle Storage & Changing rooms.
When I first read this section I thought it was a easy point to get with a little planning.
Your building needs to be design to allow for bicycle storage and changing and shower areas so cyclists or runners can use the facility and promote alternative transportation.
Requirements
For commercial or institutional buildings, provide secure bicycle racks and/or storage (within 200 yards of a
building entrance) for 5% or more of all building users (measured at peak periods), AND, provide shower and
changing facilities in the building, or within 200 yards of a building entrance, for 0.5% of Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) occupants.
OR
For residential buildings, provide covered storage facilities for securing bicycles for 15% or more of building occupants in lieu of changing/shower facilities.
Potential Technologies & Strategies
Design the building with transportation amenities such as bicycle racks and showering/changing facilities."
Try to promote less use of the automobile and you will probably qualify for at least one LEED point.
Good Luck with your project
Eric
