Sustainable eating can lead to Sustainable Architecture

A sustainable diet can help guide your way to sustainable living. One of my strong opinions is that sustainable architecture is only as good as the people who use it. You can have the most advanced green Leed certified building in the world and if the occupants do not believe in the goal it was an expensive proposition. People who use buildings have a big impact on making sustainable buildings work. The building can help save resources by using high r-value insulation with air tight construction with air handlers bringing fresh air in and expelling stale air with the efficiency of an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator).

Sustainable farming practices and eating foods that can be locally grown without the need of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, preservatives or additives, Genetically engineered seeds or ingredients will promote good results in your health and the earth. If farming is done with good practices the land will be better drought resistant, less likely for erosion, less ground water pollution and improved farm biodiversity. This sounds like a good start to sustainable building but we cannot achieve this without the will of the majority of people on the planet. People promote change.

I had recently interview a nutritionist in a hospital and we discussed organic foods. She was not convinced because the FDA had not ruled or standardized or verify the claims of the organic labels. She is right it is the wilds west when it comes to labeling organic products but the concept of not using the above ingredients in our food makes much sense and where was the FDA here.

We have a population explosion and we need to produce food at a quicker rate than we did 20 or 30 years ago and we need to have it affordable. We need to keep food affordable and safe. I would like to see more studies on how farmers could generate the same amount of crop with sustainable farming practices. I have heard that chickens are raised in 45 days or less before ending up on your table in lieu of 3 months. The chickens tend to be feed a higher fat content and have been engineered to have more breast meat. Corns is feed to almost all live stock. Farm raised Salmon is also being taught to feed on the high fat corn diet. Fast and fat.

If you have a diet that consists of mainly fruit and vegetables and lower amounts of saturated fats and trans fat you will feel much better and have much more energy. If you choose foods that are not processed your body can break it down better without all the preservatives found in packaged processed foods.

So to circle around what you put in your body can effect your heath and well being of you and the planet. The same thing goes for sustainable buildings, it is only as good as the people inside them. People who have sensitivity to these topics will result in manufacturers who want to sell them product that meets their standards with third party verification. The more people who crave sustainable foods, buildings, and cars will promote an environment and a capitalistic environment that is more sustainable without tax incentives. It’s start with you!

Top Ten Green Building Tips

10. Solar panels or Geothermal for heating and cooling.
9. Solar hot water. Vacuum tubes that take the heat from sun.
30 Percent more efficient than pv panels
8. Small wind turbines with only LED lighting in your home.
7. Limit site disruption and development.
6. Use landscaping that requires little watering or cutting.
5. Rain collection used for watering landscape
4. Super insulated walls air tightness with heat recovery unit
3. Windows with a U Value of .32 or lower
2. Good roof geometry that allows or manages snow and rain well.
1. Simple planning and design that takes good advantage of the solar orientation.

The design discussions and drawings to build reflect the least amount of space needed to acomplish the functional goals but the outcome is a great looking building which feels spacious and functions well.

It does not have to look green or have fancy expensive gizmos to be considered green or sustainable design. You do not need lots of glass on the south side with plants growing in a two story interior space like they did in the 70's. Lets not make the same mistake twice and make bad looking buildings that scream green. I can not tell you how many times someone has told me that they do not want a green building because they look bad.

Minimize to maximize your goals for a sustainable lifestyle.

Tread Lightly or Less
Be Green
Be Happy

and remember save the expensive gizmos for the people who can afford it.

If you only accomplish 1 thru 8 your doing extremely well on your goal to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

Look for schools as examples for Green Building

Collaborative for High Performance Schools or CHPS was around well before LEED and the USGBC and has help form the early specifications for the LEED rating system we know today. Schools need to be efficient and use less energy so they do not become a financial burden for the city and towns they serve. They also need to be sustainable indoor learning environments that will help educate new generations. It has been proven that attendance has been increase when natural day lighting is introduce in an interior space. Lets face it when we are inside for the majority of the day we do feel uplifted when natural light is present.

I have recently heard the story of how the Woburn High School project had many green features that I felt all school projects should explore. One of the most impressive feature was a water recycling plant on site at the cost of $250,000.00. This cost seems large but when you factor that the return on investment was realized in less then a year it makes very good sense. It also reduces the potable water from the local water plant. Another green feature was the re-use of wood wainscoting from the original school installed in the new school. This also saves material from finding its way into a landfill. Recycled rubber flooring was used in the gymnasium. Recycled material is also green because it avoids using virgin material as well as keeping material out of our landfills. This particular recycled rubber floor also came with a 25 year manufacturer warranty. This flooring was a good choice for the school and students and the city it serves.

Reduce Re-use Re-Cycle

Use the three R's to achieve a more sustainable lifestyle.

Green Building starts with a Green Lifestyle

Washing your clothes in cold water will
help reduce energy that is needed to warm the
water.

-
Your sustainable lifestyle is just as
important as your green building.
-
It can actually be more important.
-
Your home could be green by having a
tankless water heater.
-
Air dry your clothes in lieu of
using a lot of electric or gas
heat.
