SS Credit 1 - Site Selection

SS Credit 1 - Sustainable Sites

This is the first available credit to receive a point. The Construction Activity Pollution Prevention prerequisite is not available for a point but is required to achieve the other 14 points available in the Sustainable Site category.

Site Selection

Avoid development of inappropriate sites and reduce the environmental impact from the location of a building on a site as defined by USGBC.

1. Prime Farm Land as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture.
2. Previously undeveloped land whose elevation is lower than 5 feet above the elevation of the 100-year flood zone as defined by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency)
3. Habitat for any wildlife species
4. Within 100 feet of any wetlands
5. Previously undeveloped land that is within 50 feet of a water body, defined as seas, lakes, rivers, streams
6. Private Park land previously

It may be useful for a owner or developer to maintain a narrative of sites excluded because this site had less impact on the existing site.

Tread Lightly or not at all.

That is the theme of the Blog.
